Jonas Hansen was awarded the professorship in Design and Media Technology in the Multimedia|VR course in the Design faculty in the summer semester 2017. Hansen, who was born in Bielefeld in 1978, had already worked as a substitute professor here in 2016/17. 2018 to 2022 Pro-rector at BURG.
He studied Design for Virtual Theatre and Games at HKU University of the Arts Utrecht between 1999 and 2003, and Media Technology at the University of Leiden between 2004 and 2006. Since 2003, Hansen has been a freelance media artist and designer. He was a founding member of the ‘Stichting z25.org’ foundation in Utrecht in 2003, also also of the Paidia Institute based in Cologne in 2009. His works range from interactive installations right through to experimental games that often investigate the boundaries between the real and virtual worlds. He has cooperated with the Paidia Institute on the focal area of play with its aesthetic and social interrelationships with design, art and technology. His works and lectures have been presented at exhibitions, festivals and conferences such as the Museum of Modern Art (Rovereto), the ComeOutAndPlay Festival (Amsterdam), Ars Electronica (Linz), Transmediale (Berlin), the Translife International Triennial of New Media Art China (Beijing), the Nam June Paik Art Center (Seoul) and ZKM Karlsruhe.
From 2007 to 2016, Jonas Hansen was an artistic-academic assistant at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne in the area of experimental 3D and games; he also had a teaching position at the Cologne Game Lab (Cologne University of Applied Sciences) in the area of Game Design from 2014 to 2015.
