From tapestries to spatial installations – studying Textile Arts at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle means exploring textiles as a means of artistic expression. In addition to skills involving the pattern-forming systems of order that fibres are capable of creating, the structure’s material aesthetics and colours play important roles in the realisation of artistic concepts by means of the textile medium. The transmission of painterly principles to the process of artistic creation fortifies the spatial and colour-related effect of tex tile works.Using the art form of the traditional tapestry as a springboard, the students in this course can draw from a spectrum of artistic forms of expression, techniques, and interdisciplinary practices to test their ideas and push them further through experimentation. Textile materials and techniques are considered in conjunction with approaches and concepts from other forms of the visual arts.

The Textile Arts study programme comprises 10 semesters and is divided into a two-year foundation course followed by a main course. The basic programme focuses on the development of creative expression and the acquisition of technical and artistic skills. Another focus is on the acquisition of theoretical knowledge and discourse with and about contemporary art.

Regular individual and group discussions about the students' own artistic work are an important part of the class work. The search for, development and consolidation of one's own artistic language is the goal and runs through the entire programme.

Our textile workshops offer looms, a tufting machine, embroidery machines and a dyeing workshop. The experts on site also offer the opportunity to learn historical techniques and translate them into contemporary art where necessary. Nevertheless, the choice of materials in the class is free and is not limited to textile techniques. Rather, the medium should be determined by the idea. In this way, conceptual and processual work go hand in hand.

The artistic spectrum of the class ranges from painting, textile works in two- and three-dimensional space, objects and installations to performances and video art.

Prerequisites

General higher education entrance qualification and artistic aptitude. No previous technical or craft knowledge required. Exceptional cases: In the case of outstanding talent in conjunction with professional experience, the general higher education entrance qualification may be waived.

Large studio

The top floor of the Hermes building is home to our large studio with open and partitioned workstations. The open-plan studio is the work and communication space for students and teaching staff.

The 5th floor is also home to our Salon, a large extra room for monthly self-organised group exhibitions of four students each (see News), a platform for showing and discussing art.

Computer workstations, a reference library and a work documentation archive are available in separate rooms.
 

Tuft facility

On the ground floor of the Hermes building is our newly installed tufting facility. Small and large-format hand-tufted objects and carpets can be produced there.

Textile workshops

Our weaving workshop is one of the textile workshops on the Design campus. In addition to the techniques of picture knitting, dobby and jacquard weaving, courses in hand and machine embroidery and dyeing are offered in cooperation with the textile restoration department. The textile design screen printing workshop can be used for project work by prior arrangement.

Prerequisites

General qualification for university entrance, and artistic suitability. No specialist prior technical and craft skills are required. Exceptions: The general qualification for university entrance can be waived in cases of exceptional talent combined with professional experience.

Study Information Day

The university holds a Study Information Day in January every year for applicants. General information on the university is provided, and the various disciplines showcase themselves. You will be able to talk to students and to assistants. The precise date is announced on our website by mid-December at the latest.

Annual exhibition

The traditional summer festival, which includes the annual exhibition, is held every year in July at Burg Giebichenstein. The university opens up its studios, seminar facilities and workshops to all who are curious about the fresh ideas, objects and pieces of art that have been created in the various art and design disciplines at the state of Saxony-Anhalt's art university. The publication accompanies a site-specific solo show of the Franco-German artist at the Belvedere 21 providing insight into the wide-ranging oeuvre of Caroline Achaintre, who uses traditional techniques like tapestry, drawing and ceramic in an unconventional way.
British Art Show 8
British Art Show catalogue accompanies the major survey exhibition of contemporary British art of the same name that takes place every five years. Organized by the Hayward Touring team at Southbank Centre, the show opens in Leeds in Autumn 2015 and toured to Edinburgh, Norwich and Southampton.
