Ceramics

Part of the 'Diplom' course Plastic Arts in the Art Faculty

Ceramics are materials – both compliant and headstrong

When opening the door of a ceramic furnace after the firing process, the results can be surprising, sobering, satisfying or disappointing. However, these feelings and insights do not fade over time. The combination of specialist knowledge and experimentation makes working with various ceramic materials and ceramic techniques a lively, exciting game and turns the search for suitable expression into an artistic pursuit.

Selected courses

The teaching philosophy should awaken students’ desire to take up further challenges that will develop in the course of discussions in class and in their societal environment. Talent should develop to manifest itself in terms of personal and artistic positions. By investigating the personal and remaining open at the same time, content will find the most suitable material – often by means of less result-oriented, non-ceramic experimentation. The vision is still the convincing combination of ambition and material.

I regard our teaching as being flexible. Study breaks for students are right and sometimes necessary; glimpses of the far-away can help in discovering the essential. Once the students return, nothing will release them from the demand for lively intensity in art.

Prof. Martin Neubert
